Schott Tops Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge

Spring Valley, MN (May 25)
By: Todd Narveson

The Summit Racing Equipment USMTS Modified National Championship presented by Racindirt.com rolled in Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday. The USRA B-Mods and Hobby Stocks also joined the show.

It was the LRS Waste Services Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge with support from Randy & Sandy Norby, Bill & Brenda Weber and Lou Lou Kustom Powder Coating.

Sixteen Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stocks started their 18-lap feature. Ryan Goergen would take the early lead with Parker Anderson and Dustin Gulbrandson close behind.

The driver on the move was Luke Schluetter who started 15th and quickly worked into the top five and was up to fourth on lap four. A caution flew on lap five to slow the pace.

Schluetter took off on the start and quickly took the lead. Gulbrandson got to second on lap eight and hung right with Schluetter. Gulbrandson kept it tight until the final lap.

Gulbrandson made a bid for the lead but came up short by .096 at the checkered flag. However, Schluetter was disqualified in post-race tech inspection and the win was negated.

That handed the win to Gulbrandson with Goergen moved to second. Parker Anderson was third while fourth place finisher Steve Dwyer was also disqualified in post-race inspection. That moved Gavin Bussinger to fourth and Austin Hoeft was fifth.

There were 44-Kid’s Dreams Come True USRA B-Mods in attendance. They were split into two 18-lap A-Mains after their five heat races.

In the first feature Harley Dais led the entire distance, but the last lap was wild. Dustin Kruse worked to second and threw a slide job on Dais in the final two turns. As Kruse slid in front of Dais, his car dug in and shot up the track.

Dais narrowly missed Kruse and took the win. But Dais failed post-race tech and the win was awarded to second place finisher Taylor Ausrud. Spencer Stock was moved to second with Kruse in third. Jett Sorensen came from 14th to fourth. Ben Moudry went to the tail for an early caution and rallied to fifth.

The second feature had a good race up front early on with Tyler Werner and Garitt Wytaske. Zach Davis moved to the lead and led the mid stages. A few caution periods mid race slowed the race.

After a lap 11 restart, Hunter Kennedy stormed to the lead after he started in 10th. Kennedy, Wytaske and Noah Grinstead went three wide for the lead on lap14 before the final caution came out.

Kennedy would hold on for the win with Wytaske second. Davis finished third and Grinstead was fourth after he started 13th. Dennis Dunbar would round out the top five.

In the 40-lap USMTS Modified finale, Lucas Schott started on the pole and led all 40-laps. It did not go unchallenged though as Jim Chisholm challenged Schott the last five laps of the race.

Schott fought off a stout final lap challenge from Chisholm to take home the $5000 check. Brandon Davis finished in third with Terry Phillips and Rodney Sanders in the top five.
