Thornton & Nelson Win Stock Car Nationals

Spring Valley, MN (September 16)

By: Todd Narveson

Deer Creek Speedway hosted the 5th Annual Altenburg Construction USRA Stock Car Nationals on Saturday. The event was also supported by Podein’s Power Equipment, Root River Auto, Bus & Diesel, The Place in Protovin, Houdek Farms, Sybesma Graphics, Gift Of Life Transplant House and Donate Life.

The perfect weather conditions brought a huge car count and a nice sized crowd. An event and track record 81-Rochester Chevrolet-Medieval Chassis USRA Stock Cars From 10-states were on hand.

A very stout field of 63-Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stocks showed up too. Those entries featured 40 of the top 50 in USRA National Points.

The Hobby Stocks ran six heats and three B-Features to get down to the 30-car field for their 25-lap main event. Devin Holthaus, Chris Hovden and Gavin Bussinger led the 3-wide field to the green flag.

Luke Schluetter worked quickly from row two and got by Holthaus for the lead on lap one. Dylan Nelson stormed from 11th to second on lap four. Nelson gave chase and closed in on Schluetter on lap 14.

The duo was side-by-side on lap 15 and one circuit later, Nelson took the lead. Dylan Clinton ran close in third as the race stayed green until lap 21. Several yellows would then slow the race to a snail’s pace.

When the race got going again, Gavin Bussinger joined the fray and went three wide with Schluetter and Nelson for the lead. The top four remained close until another yellow came out to set up a dash to the finish.

Nelson took the lead and scored the win followed by Bussinger. Schluetter finished in third with Clinton in fourth while Paul Seabrooke charged from 24th to fifth.

Sybesma Graphics presented a 20-lap, $1000 to win non-qualifier feature for the Stock Cars. Drivers that finished in fourth thru eighth in the four B-Features started this race.

Cadyn Wessels took the early lead with Rodney Sanders close. Sanders took the lead on lap two, but Wessels rebounded back to the lead on lap three. A couple of cautions on lap eight kept things tight.

A six-car tangle slowed the race on lap 10. Jesse Brown was on the move from the 12th spot and moved to second on the start. The top three were close on lap 15 and Gary Pesicka alos entered the picture.

Brown took over the lead in lap 16 and led the final four laps to take the win. Pesicka got to second with Sanders in third. Wessels ended up fourth and Wayne Landheer raced from 11th to fifth.

The Stock Car main event started 30-cars, three wide for the $10,000 to win, 40-lap race. Action Engineering also put up a $500 hard charger award for the driver who advanced the most positions.

Dylan Thornton took the lead trailed by Danny Cole and Lucas Schott. The race was red flagged early on for a huge nine car wreck that blocked the track in turn one. No drivers were injured, but several were done for the night.

Thornton held firm up front, but the driver to watch was Elijah Zevenbergen. Zevenbergen started 12th and entered the top five on lap 11. Two laps later Zevenbergen was fourth and on lap 16 he was third.

Zevenbergen then challenged Schott for second on lap 21. Zevenbergen took the position on lap 23 and then went after Thornton. The lead pack got into slower traffic and things got tight.

The duo was close on lap 37 with Schott close behind. Zevenbergen threw a huge slide job in turn two with a couple of laps to go. Zevenbergen slid all the way to the wall and bounced off the concrete. That allowed Thornton to grab the lead and Schott was second.

Thornton held off a last-ditch challenge from Schott to take the huge win. Schott was second with Zevenbergen third. Jim Chisholm came from 19th to fourth and Jacob Blees was fifth.

Kevin Opheim claimed the $500 Action Engineering hard charger award. Opheim advanced 17-spots when he started 29th and finished 12th.
