Sorensen Scores WABAM Dirt Kings Win at Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (August 19)

By: Todd Narveson

It was a hot and sultry Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway for the first ever appearance of the WABAM Dirt Kings Tour for Super Late Models.

Thirty-six Late models signed in along with 27-Kid’s Dreams Come True USRA B-Mods and 18-Rochester Chevrolet USRA Stock Cars for the three-division program.

The show was sponsored by Sherwin Williams and also supported by the St. Ansgar American Legion Post 358 who also presented out nation’s colors during opening ceremonies.

Corbin Ludemann took the lead in the USRA B-Mod main event and led the first three laps. Spencer Stock then took the point while Brandon Hare worked to second before the caution came out on lap six.

Two more cautions slowed the race on lap eight. Then a red flag on lap nine as Landon Volkman rolled over in a multi car incident in turn two. Volkman was uninjured in the crash.

The race settled down and it was a great race up front. Noah Grinstead and Hunter Kennedy challenged Stock for the lead. One more caution would slow the race on lap 13.

The race up front really heated up when Kennedy used the high groove and vaulted to the lead on lap 13. Stock came back to hold the lead on lap 14 and Taylor Skauge was third after he started 12th.

The final laps were wild when Stock threw a slider in turn two to take the lead. Kennedy dove low and threw his own slider in turn three and led the pack to the white flag.

Once again Stock threw another slider in turn to on the final lap to retake the lead. Kennedy again dove love and executed another slide job in turn three. Stock tried to dive low when the duo charged to the checkered flag.

Kennedy held on for his third win of the season with Stock a close second. Hare finished in third with Grinstead fourth and Skauge wound up fifth.

Twenty-four cars started the 40-lap Dirt Kings Late Model feature. Dustin Sorensen who set fast overall time in time trials and then won his heat started on the pole with five-time Dirt Kings champion Nick Anvelink alongside.

Sorensen bolted to the lead and ran on the ragged edge on the high side of the track. Sorensen opened up a big lead and started to work through lapped traffic. That is when things got interesting.

Sorensen tried to put Taylor Scheffler a lap down and Scheffler and Sorensen collided. It appeared both would go to the tail but a unique rule to the Dirt Kings Tour saved Sorensen’s night.

Under the Dirt Kings “Gentleman’s Agreement rule Scheffler had the opportunity to tap his roof to signal officials that the incident was his fault. Scheffler eventually did tap his roof and Sorensen regained the lead.

From there, Sorensen led the rest of the way for the $5000 payday. Tyler Bruening finished second with Anvelink in third. James Giossi came home fourth and Troy Springborn raced from 16th to fifth.

The 20-lap USRA Stock Car feature concluded the night. Point leader Brayden Gjere started on the pole and led all 20-lap for his fourth win of the season at Deer Creek and 11th overall.

Gjere was challenged early on by Danny Cole and Andrew Bleess, but Gjere eventually pulled away. Bleess would finish in second with Kyle Falck third. Blake Adams was fourth and Cole ended up fifth.
