Shipman Steals First Deer Creek Win

Spring Valley, MN (August 5)

By: Todd Narveson

It was another beautiful night for racing at Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday. Another good field of 116-cars signed in and they produced some very good racing.

This week’s program was supported by J&S/JCB along with Red Can Sanitation and Randy & Sandy Norby.

Defending track champion Kadden Kath took the early lead in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOYA Midwest Modified feature. After a caution on lap two, Kath was challenged by Billy Steinberg.

Steinberg took the lead on lap six, but Kath reclaimed the lead on lap seven. Christopher Deno charged from eighth to third and closed on the lead duo. Just as the leaders were to enter lapped traffic the yellow flew on lap 11.

There was another yellow on lap 14 and on the restart Deno got to second. Just as Deno was set to possibly pass Kath for the lead, the yellow flag waved on lap 16 to set up a two-lap dash to the finish.

Kath got a good start and led the last two laps for his third win of the season. Steinberg rallied to finish second with Deno third. Tommy Myer finished fourth but was disqualified in post-race tech. That moved Jacob Toepper to fourth and Don Schaefer to fifth.

Krysta Doughty and Dustin Gulbrandson had a good battle for the lead to start the Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stock feature. Gulbrandson took the lead while Luke Schluetter moved in to race Doughty.

Schluetter got to second on lap eight, but Gulbrandson held a large lead. There was a tremendous four car race for fourth. That changed on lap 15 when the yellow flag came out to make it a three-lap race to the finish.

Gulbrandson held on to score his 10th win of the season. Nick Schwebach made a late move for second with Schluetter third. Chris Hovden was fourth and Zac Smith finished fifth.

The Kid’s Dreams Come True USRA B-Mods ran one feature this week with 37-cars signed in. Their feature got off to a rough start on lap one when seven cars stacked up to bring out the yellow flag.

The race was filled with yellow flags early on with four of them in the first seven laps. Once the race got going, pole sitter Joe Chisholm took off and led the entire 18-laps for his 10th win of the season.

Dan Hovden and Dustin Kruse had a good race for second with Hovden coming out on top. Jett Sorensen had his best ever finish at Deer Creek in fourth and Hunter Kennedy was fifth.

The Rochester Chevrolet USRA Stock Car feature was spectacular. Kory Adams led and they were four wide for second on lap two. Andrew Bleess moved up and took the lead from Adams on lap four and Travis Shipman ran from seventh to second.

Shipman moved past Bleess for the lead on lap five and Kyle Falck was third on lap six. Falck passed Bleess for second on lap eight and then looked to challenge Shipman for the lead.

Falck grabbed the lead in turn four on lap 11 and opened up a sixth tenths of a second lead. Shipman was able to reel Falck back in and with one to go made his move.

Shipman went low in turn two and got alongside Falck. Shipman threw a slide job in turn three and took the lead. Falck dove low in turn four and the duo charged toward the checkered flag.

Shipman powered outside of Falck and stole the win by two one thousandth of a second in a thriller of a finish. It was Shipman’s first win at Deer Creek. Brayden Gjere finished in third with Adams fourth and Bleess fifth.

The Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature was dominated by Brandon Davis. Davis started third and took the lead from Ryan Wiome. Josh Angst and Jacob Bleess also passed Wiome for second and third.

Davis took off from there and opened up a huge lead. Even when the leader caught the back of the field, Davis opened his lead even larger.

At the checkered flag, Davis won by 7.84-seconds over Bleess. It was Davis’ 73-career win at Deer Creek and 193rd of his career. Bleess finished second with Angst third. Keith Foss was fourth and Kylie Kath fifth.
