Brom’s Career First & Davis Wins Modified Thriller At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (June 25)

By: Todd Narveson

Early morning rain on Saturday did not stop the race program at Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday. The track prep crew was able to get the facility in great shape for racing action.

There was a good field of 102-cars in the five classes. Two more first time Deer Creek winners were crowned and one feature race was won in the final corner. This week’s event was presented by Jones Ace Hardware, Randy & Sandy Norby, Bill & Brenda Weber and the Osage Co-op.

The Kid’s Dreams Come True USRA B-Mod feature was a caution plagued race. Zach Brom held the early lead with Alex Schubbe and Dennis Dunbar behind Brom. The yellow flag was displayed numerous times early in the race which interrupted a pretty good battle going on up front.

Through all the yellows, Brom held his ground up front while Colby Mann raced Schubber for second. Noah Grinstead was the car on the move and got to third on lap 10 after he started 14th. The top three were tight and Grinstead then attempted to take second.

Unfortunately, the fifth caution flag of the race was displayed. Track rules state any feature race that has five yellow flags under green flag conditions will have five laps dropped from the scheduled distance. That is what took place on lap 10 which made the race a three-lap shootout.

Brom drove the final three laps to perfection to score his first ever win. Grinstead completed his charge in second with Schubbe third. Kyle Anderson drove t oa fourth place finish and Mann was fifth.

Kory Adams led the Adams Grpahix WISSOTA Street Stock feature on lap one. Adams was followed closely by Braden Brauer, Cole Richards and Kolton Brauer. Adams grazed the turn two wall on lap four and that was all Braden Brauer needed to take the lead.

Brauer led the rest of the way for his third win at Deer Creek this season. Kolton Brauer got past Adams for second while Cole Richards was fourth and Danny Richards finished in fifth.

The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature got off to a rough start with a five-car collision on the first lap. Colton Kramer led early until he spun on lap three. Somehow, everyone missed him and avoided a huge crash.

Adam Martinson then took the lead with Trevis Underdahl, Christopher Deno, Kadden Kath and Nick Koehler in tight quarters. On a lap three restart Koehler darted to third while Underdahl challenged Martinson for the lead. Underdahl took the lead on lap six while Koehler went to second.

On lap eight, Koehler threw a slide job to take the lead, but Underdahl moved back low and took the lead briefly before Koehler took over. Koehler zipped to his third win of the year followed by Underdahl in second. Martinson finished third with Mitch Weiss fourth and Kath was fifth.

A caution on lap one slowed the Medieval Chassis USRA Stock Car feature, but after that it ran without another stoppage. Polesitter Shawn Peter took the early lead until Jake Lampert pulled a slide job to take the lead on lap five. Peter shot right back by on lap six while Brayden Gjere made it a three-car race.

Gjere passed Lampert for second and then challenged for the lead. Gjere used the high groove to snag the lead in turn four on the eighth lap. From there Gjere cruised to his first win at Deer Creek. Peter finished second with Lampert third while Kevin Donlan charged from 10th to fourth and Chris Adams was fifth.

Just like the Stock Cars, the Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds were halted by a caution on lap one. Outside front row starter Rodney Sanders took the early advantage while polesitter Keith Foss gave chase. Foss brushed the turn two wall and Ryan Wetzstein took over second.

Brandon Davis ran the low groove and was on the move into fourth on lap four. Davis then raced Foss for third and in the mean-time Sanders had opened up a full straightaway lead. Davis moved past Foss for third and then set after Wetzstein. A caution on lap eight erased Sanders huge lead.

On the start, Davis took second and Jim Chisholm was now third after starting in row six. Chisholm raced with Davis for second for a few laps until Davis pulled away. Again, Sanders had opened up a big lead, bur Davis still used the low groove to slowly close the gap. A caution on lap 18 slowed the race and put Davis and Chisholm on Sanders rear bumper.

The final seven laps were great when Davis was able to get alongside Sanders for the lead but not quite able to get by. Sanders led Davis to the white flag and continued to lead into turn three.

With the checkered flag waving, Davis got an excellent run off the low side of turn four and pulled alongside Sanders. At the finish line, Davis took the win by .009 over Sanders. Chisholm finished in third, Jason Cummins came from 10th to fourth and Wetzstein was fifth.

It was Davis’ 69th career win at Deer Creek which leads all drivers in Deer Creek’s track history. Davis also pulled within one win of Mike Sorensen for the all-time feature win lead in the Modified division.
