Zevenbergen & Clinton Charge To Stock Car National Titles

Spring Valley, MN (September 18)

By: Todd Narveson

It was a spectacular day at Deer Creek Speedway for the 3rd Annual Stock Car Nationals presented by Altenburg Construction. Kid’s Dreams Come True, Podeins Power Equipment and Blake’s Auto also supported the program.

A stout field of 55-Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks signed in. Six heat races and three b-features sliced the field down to the 24-car field for the 25-lap feature that started three-wide.

Pole sitter Austin Hoeft took the early lead, but Steve Larson drove past for the top spot. Hoeft quickly rallied and reclaimed the lead on lap three. Larson again pulled alongside Hoeft and stole the lead back on lap five.

Jeremy Crimmins who started 16th had charged all the way to third with Justin Litchy behind him. Lichty continued his drive to the front and took the lead from Larson on lap nine. Lichty, Larson and Crimmins were in a tight pack when Jay Mensink slowed to bring out the caution on lap 17.

On the restart Dylan Clinton who started 15th charged to second while the lead pack remained tight. Lichty led, but spun in turn two on lap 20. Clinton drove to the lead and then a six-car tangle on lap 22 set up a three-lap dash to the finish.

Clinton led the rest of the way for the win for the $1000 payday. Clinton also collected the $100 hard charger award that the Eagles Club of Rochester added to the purse.

Crimmins finished in second while 12th starter Tyler Schlumbohm was third. Joshua Ludeking raced from 13th to fourth and defending race champion Dustin Gulbrandson was fifth.

An event record 51-Medieval Chassis USRA Stock Cars turned out for this year’s event. Fourteen of the top 25 in national points signed in and they did not disappoint the fans in attendance.

Just like the Hobby Stocks, the Stock Cars ran six heats and three b-features to determine their 24-car field for the 40-lap, $5000 to win main event that also started three-wide.

Derek Green took off from the outside of row one to take the lead. Brady Link and Chris Hovden trailed, but Link mounted a challenge right away. Link dove low on Green and they were side-by-side for the lead.

Link scooted by on lap two while Stefan Sybesma got to second with Hovden third before a yellow slowed the race on lap three. The pack took off racing on the top groove and on lap 10 Sybesma made contact with the wall in turn one. Sybesma slowed quickly and Derek Green had no place to go and made hard contact to bring out the yellow.

Link took off on the restart and opened up a big lead with Lynn Panos in second. Hovden and Kevin Donlan had a good race for third until they tangled on the backstretch and both cars got into the wall with 24-laps complete.  The caution came out and that set up a wild restart.

Elijah Zevenvbergen who started 16th charged to third while Donlan tried to get back the spot. Meanwhile, Link still led, but was unable to get away from Panos this time. Another yellow came out on lap 32 to once again stack up field.

Zevenbergen worked well on the low side and darted to second. Link ran the high side while Zevenbergen kept digging low. Zevenbergen took the lead on lap 34, but Link got back by on lap 36.

Zevenbergen threw a wild slider on lap 37 in turn two to steal the lead. Zevenbergen led the final laps and got to the checkered flag for the big payday. Zevenbergen also took the $100 hard charger prize from the Eagles Club and a $100 bonus from the Fayette County Speedway in West Union, IA.

Link finished in the second spot while Panos would finish in third. Chanse Hollatz came from 15th to fourth and Donlan ended up fifth.
