Dramatic Finishes Highlight Veterans Night At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (August 14)

By: Todd Narveson

Saturday evening was a very special at Deer Creek Speedway. The annual Veterans Night was held honoring all military veterans and current serving military members. Rochester Chevrolet provided free admission for them and a guest for the night.

Rochester Chevrolet also donated $10,000 to the cause. They also put $1000 in bonus purse money to the top 10 feature finishers in all five divisions.

There were all kinds of fund raising going on to benefit the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) Mayo Southeast Chapter 28. A silent auction, raffles, 50/50 drawing and the push-up challenge for the feature winners took place. When all was said and done a preliminary total of over $40,000 was raised.

This week was the Afco Race Of Champions qualifiers for the WISSOTA sanctioned divisions. The winners of the Midwest Modified, Super Stock and Street Stock divisions can represent Deer Creek at the Race of Champions held at the WISSOTA 100 in September.

Midwest Modified point leader Mitch Weiss took advantage of his good redraw and took the lead early in their main event. Kadden Kath worked to second in a great battle with Don Schaefer, Adam Martinson, Dylan Goettl and Ryan Goergen involved.

Weiss held a pretty good advantage with Kath solid in second. The race for third continued throughout the race until a caution came out on lap 16. That wiped out Weiss’ lead and set up a wild finish.

Weiss led but Kath roared to the top of turn two. Kath dove to the inside down the backstretch and slid in front of Weiss for the lead. The white flag flew and Weiss got to the inside of Kath in turn two.

Kath held the momentum in the top groove and held off Weiss for his second win of the season. Adam Martinson finished in third with Dylan Goettl in fourth and Don Schaefer in the top five. Kath did 40-push ups at $29 a piece for the D.A.V.

The Adams Graphics WISSOTA Street Stock feature was a barn-burner. Kyle Genett took off from row one to the lead, but Cole Richards, Kory Adams and Nick Schwebach were close behind.

The top seven were really tight when the caution flag came out on lap nine. Genett and Cole Richards raced for the lead and Richards was scored the leader on lap 11. Braden Brauer had cracked the top five and drove to third right with the lead duo.

Genett and Brauer made contact on the frontstretch as they completed lap 15. Brauer was headed straight for the wall, but somehow got things corrected and avoided any impact. Genett was sent to the tail and Brauer was able to continue.

Richards led on the restart with Brauer, Zach Elward, Danny Richards and Schwebach in tow. With two to go Brauer made a move on the top groove in turn two. He and Richards touched as Brauer scraped the wall. Danny Richards swooped in and briefly took second.

The white flag flew and Cole Richards led into turns one and two. Brauer went back to the top and got a great run off of turn two. Brauer got a tremendous drive out of turn four and beat Cole Richards to the line by .009.

For Brauer it was win number seven at Deer Creek and 13th overall. Cole Richards was second with Danny Richards third, Elward was fourth and Schwebach was fifth. Brauer then ripped off 75-push ups in victory lane.

Scott Demmer took off from row one to lead the USRA B-Mod main event. Demmer opened up a good lead for awhile while Noah Grinstead worked to second and tried to catch the leader

Demmer was in command until the leaders started to catch the rear of the field. Grinstead and Taylor Ausrud reeled in the leader with Joe Chisholm and Dan Hovden close behind them. A yellow came out on lap 13 to close up the field.

On the restart, Grinstead took the lead and Ausrud took second. Demmer was right there and Hovden started to come alive. Hovden used the low groove and got to second before another yellow flag waved on lap 15.

It was a wild three lap dash to the finish. Hovden applied pressure to Grinstead until the white flag flew. Hovden threw a slide job in turn two for the lead. Hovden bounced off the wall and Grinstead bolted back to the point. Hovden entered turn three low and executed a perfect slide job to squeeze out his 14th win of the season.

Grinstead was a close second with Ausrud in third. Joe Chisholm raced to a fourth place finish with Dustin Kruse in fifth. Hovden took the push-up challenge and did 56 of them.

Ryan Wiome came off row one to lead the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Dennis Dunbar and Brandon Duellman hung close to Wiome before a caution flew on lap 4.

Duellman snagged the lead on lap five but Wiome overtook him soon after. Wiome led the rest of the way for his seventh win of the season. Duellman finished in second while Dan Nissalke came from seventh to third with Neil Eckhart and Spencer Stock in the top five. Wiome executed 70-push ups in victory lane.

Front row starter Jason Cummins bolted from row one to lead the NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature. David Baxter hung right with Cummins and was scored the leader of lap two.

Cummins returned the favor and was scored the leader on lap three. Baxter remained close to Cummins while Brandon Davis was on the charge by Jayden Larson to third. Davis quickly made it a three car battle up front.

Davis moved to second on lap 10 and then set after Cummins. Davis took the lead on lap 15 before a yellow slowed the race on lap 16. Davis took off on the start and led the rest of the way for his fourth win of the season and 67th of his career at Deer Creek.

Cummins fended off Baxter for second. Josh Angst had a great run coming from 12th to fourth and John Doelle was fifth. Tralo Companies added an extra $100 per push up for the modified feature to make it $129 per push up. Davis took the challenge and slammed down 65-push ups.
