Deer Creek Speedway

Anderson & Songer Grab Stock Car Nationals Glory

Spring Valley, MN (September 14)

By: Todd Narveson

Seven inches of rain fell during the week at Deer Creek Speedway and an early morning shower on race day almost ended hopes of racing. But the rain stopped and the track crew did an outstanding job to get the track in race shape.

The Inaugural USRA Stock Car Nationals event went on as scheduled. The show was presented by Kid’s Dreams Come True and Podein’s Power Equipment. Despite the forecast for more rain, it did not materialize and the program went on.

An incredible field of 48-American Racer USRA Stock Cars and 53-Cook Racing Supply USRA Hobby Stocks signed in and they put on a great show for the nice turnout of race fans that came out to see the event.

The Hobby Stocks ran six heat races in which the top 12 in passing points were locked into the feature. The rest ran three B-Features which took the top four out of each race to make up the 24-car starting field for the $1000 to win main event.

Steve Larson, Parker Larson and Brian Radloff were scheduled to roll off from row one for the three wide start. Parker Larson failed to make the call so that moved the middle row up one row and that put Jamie Songer in the middle of row one.

Songer bolted to the early lead in the 25-lap feature with Steve Larson and Zac Smith close. Tyler Schlumbohm challenged Larson for second while Dustin Gulbrandson started 13th and cracked the top five on lap three. Eric Stanton who started 11th was on the charge also and moved into the top five on lap four.

The other car on the fly was Justin Luinenberg. Luinenberg started 15th and he also moved to fifth on lap seven while Stanton got to fourth. Songer continued to lead but Stanton and Luinenberg continued their moves towards the front. A caution on lap 12 slowed the field and kept everyone close to Songer.

On the start, Luinenberg got to second and Stanton drove to third. Stanton then made the pass for second on lap 13. Stanton was right with Songer and tried to find a way to snag the lead on lap 17. Gulbrandson who was fifth, tagged the turn two wall to bring out a yellow on lap 19. Travis Krause was another car on the move as he was up to fifth from the 16th spot.

Stanton would challenge Songer a couple of times and got alongside when he tried to steal the lead. Stanton made a serious bid on the final lap, but Songer edged ahead to take the big win. Luinenberg finished in third with Schlumbohm fourth and Krause was fifth.

The USRA Stock Cars also ran six heat races with the top 12 in passing points locked into the 40-lap, $2000 to win main. There were also three B-Mains with the top four going to the feature. There were also two Ironman Series provisionals to male it a 26-car field.

Darin Korthals, Lynn Panos and Jake Lampert redrew the top three and led the three-wide dance to the start of the feature. Second row start Dean Cornelius got to the lead on lap one with Panos and Korthals on his tail. Kevin Donlan worked to fourth on lap two.

Panos and Korthals battled for second while they were three and four wide behind them. Korthals got to second while Dillon Anderson worked the low groove to third after he started 10th. Anderson slipped past Korthals for second on lap seven and Donlan was up to third. A yellow on lap eight tightened the field up more than they already were.

Cornelius led on the start but Anderson went way low to steal the lead on lap 12. Mitch Hovden moved to third before another caution came out on lap 13. Hovden darted to second on the start and Kyle Falck who started 14th was now third. They ran in formation until a lap 27 caution made things interesting.

Anderson led and stretched out his advantage, Falck moved to second and Cornelius was back to third while Hovden slipped back to fourth, Falck reeled in Anderson and was right there with the leader on lap 31. Anderson gave the low groove to Falck and the race was on.

Falck slipped by for the lead on lap 35, but Anderson returned the favor on the next circuit. Meanwhile Travis Shipman made time in the middle groove and drove to third. Shipman closed in on the lead duo as the laps wound down. Anderson took the win with Falck second and Shipman third. Cornelius finished in fourth and Hovden was fifth.

The event was a success and it was announced their will be a 2nd Annual Stock car Nationals in 2020. Stay tuned to www.deercreekspeedway.com for more details on the 2020 race season.
