Schaefer Breaks Dry Spell At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (August 24)
By: Todd Narveson
The final night for track point was held this week at Deer Creek Speedway. A field of 102-cars competed and they put on a great show for the fans in attendance.
This week’s program was presented by Kibble Equipment along with Randy and Sandy Norby and Wagner Trucking. One driver ended a long dry spell, while the rest of the winners ended the regular season on hot streaks.
The National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mods were up first for their 18-lap main event. Alex Schubbe and Brandon Hare led the 26-car field to the green flag. The green flag waved and Jett Sorensen took it three wide for the lead with Hare and Schubbe.
Hare took the point while A.J. Hoff drove to second. Hoff dove low on Hare and the race was on for the lead. Hoff led lap four with Hare close and Sorensen in third. Jayden Larson and Troy Hale then went three wide with Sorensen. Sorensen then spun in turn one to bring out the caution on lap 5. Another quick yellow on lap six kept the field stacked up tight.
When the green flag returned, ninth starter Parker Hale made his presence felt. Parker Hale darted to third and brought Kadden Kath with him to fourth. Hare got the lead from Hoff on lap seven and Hale was now second. Hale threw a slider to take the lead from Hare on lap nine. Kath then challenged Hare for second while 15th starter Jim Chisholm moved into the top five.
On final yellow came out on lap 13, but it did not slow down Hale. Hale led the last five circuits to win his second in a row. Hare held off Kath to finish in second with Chisholm’s charge ending in fourth and Hoff was fifth.
The Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks put on a very good show with their 18-lap feature. Right off the bat Bernie Adams, Nick Schwebach and Cody Hyatt were three abreast for the lead. Adams took the point and A.J. Zvorak was on the fly to second and they were three wide for third.
Bernie Adams was pursued by Zvorak and Kory Adams used the top groove to take third as the top seven cars were tight. Zvorak led lap four but Bernie Adams drove back up alongside while Kory Adams was right there. Schwebach and Dustin Doughty raced for fourth right behind the lead trio.
Bernie Adams led lap seven with Zvorak and Kory Adams close. Doughty moved by Schwebach and made it a four car race. Doughty then passed Kory Adams for third and back up front Zvorak once again was the leader. Doughty slipped past Bernie Adams for second and Danny Richards cracked the top five before a caution came out on lap 11.
On the start, Schwebach darted to the inside and pulled even with Zvorak for the lead. Kory Adams got back by Doughty for third with Richards in the mix. Richards really came alive and got by Doughty for fourth and then quickly moved to second. The yellow came out one last time on lap 15 to set up a three lap dash to the finish.
Richards went to the inside of Zvorak and took the lead on lap 16. Richards led the final two laps for his second win in a row. Zvorak finished second while Braden Brauer’s late race surge had him in third. Schwebach would finish fourth and Wes Howland got to fifth on the final lap.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature got off to a rocky start when seven cars piled up in turn two on the first lap. Then another caution on lap two reset the field once again. Outside pole sitter Don Schaefer took the early lead.
Dylan Goettl and Jason Haugerud were close and Haugerud snuck to the lead on lap two. Schaefer regained the lead on lap three and extended his advantage. The race behind Schaefer was good with Goettl, Haugerud, Peter Lueschner and Mitch Weiss all close.
Schaefer had the advantage with the very good race for second still going on behind him. Goettl, Weiss and Lueschner remained in a tight pack on lap 11. Weiss got to second on lap 14 with Lueschner still there in third. Schaefer looked poised to get the win, but a caution when the white flag flew erased his lead and set up a two lap dash to the finish.
Schaefer had a great start, but another yellow would stop the race. The green came out and Weiss was right with Schaefer this time. Weiss made a bid for the lead, but Schaefer held him off for his first win since August 13, 2016. Lueschner finished in third with Goettl fourth and Nick Koehler was fifth.
Neil Eckhart held the lead after one lap of the Crenlo WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Schatney Sanders sat in second while Ryan Wiome and Jeff Brauer raced for third. Fifth row starter Dustin Nelson who was designated as the Brauer Roofing Super Stock Challenge driver was in the top five when the caution came out on lap five.
Eckhart held the lead, but Wiome darted to second. Sanders, Brauer and Nelson went at it for third with Nelson taking the spot on lap seven. Eckhart pulled away at this point and was long gone. Nelson then challenged Wiome for second and they exchanged the spot until Nelson finally took over on lap 12.
Eckhart led the entire 20-lap race for his fifth win of the season. Nelson’s bid for the $450 bonus came up one spot short in second. Wiome would finish in third with Brauer fourth and Kevin Hager was fifth.
After an initial yellow flag on lap one, Jake Timm took off from row one to lead the NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature. Another caution on lap two slowed the action, but Timm again bolted away from the pack on the restart.
Kevin Stoa, Joe Ludemann and Alex Williamson raced for second with Stoa edging in front on lap 3. Williamson got past Ludemann for third as fifth row starter Brandon Davis used the low groove and was fourth on lap 4. Davis scooted past Williamson and then set after Stoa. Davis secured the runner up spot on lap seven.
Timm held a straightaway advantage at this point with Davis far behind. Dustin Sorensen then mixed it up with Williamson and Stoa for second. Timm started to enter lapped traffic on lap 11 and that helped Davis reel in the leader.
The leaders were in heavy lapped traffic and Davis caught Timm on lap 15. Davis stole the lead on lap 16 and extended his lead. Timm then slowed to trigger a caution with two laps to go. Stoa then had an issue on the start and this stacked up the field for another caution.
Davis led the dash to the finish for his sixth win in a row and seventh of the year. Sorensen got by Williamson on the final restart for second with Williamson third. Josh Angst came from row six to finish fourth and Brad Waits who also started in row six was fifth.
Congratulations to the 2019 track champions, Dustin Doughty in the WISSOTA Street Stocks and Mitch Weiss in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Jeff Brauer won the WISSOTA Super Stock title, while Jim Chisholm is the USRA B-Mod champ. Brandon Davis won the USRA Modified title and will also be crowned “King Of The Creek as well.
