Deer Creek Speedway

Wiome, Kath & Adams Top WISSOTA R.O.C, Qualifiers

Spring Valley, MN (August 10) - By:  Todd Narveson

Tasseldega Nights was the prime attraction this week at Deer Creek Speedway. The corn and soybean growers of Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Olmsted, Southwest Wabasha and Mower Counties along with the Minnesota Corn Growers Association offered free admission this week.

The night was meant to educate people on the corn growers and the ethanol industry in the state of Minnesota. There was much to see and do for fans to learn more about the corn growers. Compeer Financial was also a presenting sponsor for the evening.

Kid’s also had a lot of fun this week with the 2nd annual Box Car Races at intermission. Also one driver in each of the five division features was awarded a case of Schaeffer Oil by local dealer Darryl and Hunter Thome.

Tonight was also the Race Of Champions qualifier races for the three WISSOTA sanctioned classes. Each feature winner would be qualified for the Race Of Champions held at the Speedway Motors WISSOTA 100 to be held at the I-94 Speedway in Fergus Falls, MN next month.

The National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mods had another stout field of 32-cars sign in this week. Four heats and one B-main whittled the field down to the 24-car field for their 18-lap feature.

Cole Christensen and Eric Thill led the pack to the green, but second row starter Dan Hovden quickly moved in to challenge Christensen for the lead. Kadden Kath jumped to third before a yellow came out for Ben Moudry who slowed.

On the restart, Hovden took off while Kath moved to second. Christensen bounced off the wall in turn two and dropped back a few positions. Ryan Maitland worked his way past Joe Chisholm to fourth on lap 10, then another yellow flew for a stalled Christensen.

Hovden led Kath on the start while A.J, Hoff and Maitland raced for third. Hoff grazed the wall on lap 14 and that allowed Maitland to take the spot. Hovden appeared to be in control of the race, but a caution on lap 15 set up a wild three lap dash.

Hovden led on the restart, but Kath hung right with him. Kath made a serious bid for the lead and got alongside Hovden. Hovden held on to score the win with Kath a close second. Maitland finished in third with Hoff and Scott Demmer fourth and fifth.

Kory Adams shot off of row one to lead the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stock feature. Adams was followed closely by Dustin Doughty and Braden Brauer. The top three wheeled around the track in tight formation through the early stages of the race.

Doughty used the low groove to challenge Adams for the lead on lap 10. They had a great race going when they were side-by-side on laps 11 and 12. They remained close when a caution came out on lap 14.

Adams led when the green flag came out while Braden Brauer insisted on making it a three car race up front. Zach Elward got to fourth and tried to stay with the top three cars.

Adams fended off Doughty for his second win of the season. Doughty was second with Brauer in third. Elward would finish in fourth while Bernie Adams finished out the top five.

Peter Lueschner and Mitch Weiss were door-to-door on lap one of the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Weiss stole the lead but Lueschner remained close. Kylie Kath started 15th, but quickly moved to sixth on lap four.

Kath drove to fifth and then challenged Calvin Iverson for fourth on lap six. Kath raced past Iverson and set after Ryan Goergen for third. Lueschner, Goergen and Kath were close on lap 12 while Weiss continued to lead. Kath got to third on lap 14 and then by Lueschner for second.

A yellow with a couple of laps left set up a great finish. Kath challenged Weiss and stole the lead on lap 17. Kath held off the last lap challenge from Weiss for his second win of the season. Goergen finished third with Iverson and Lueschenr in the top five.

The Crenlo WISSOTA Super Stocks had Ryan Wiome up front with Brandon Duellman giving him a strong challenge. Jeff Brauer moved to third while Wiome and Duellman raced back and forth for the lead. Brauer closed on the lead dup before a yellow flag flew on lap eight.

Duellman dove low on Wiome when the green flag flew. Brauer was close behind and then gave Duellman a challenge for second. Wiome edged out front, but Duellman and Brauer had a really good race going for second before a caution came out on lap 17.

Another yellow on lap 19 would set up a green, white checkered dash to the finish. Wiome led to the green, but Brauer was now second and tried to steal the lead. Wiome ran the upper groove while Brauer was low when the white flag flew.

Wiome was able to hold back Brauer’s last lap challenge to get his first win of the season. Brauer was a close second with Duellman in third. Kevin Hager finished in fourth and Neil Eckhart rounded out the top five.

The NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature got off to a rough start with a five car pile-up in turn four. Pole sitter Dustin Kruse was penalized one row for the bad start and that moved Dustin Sorensen to row one alongside Brandon Davis. Josh Angst went pit side, but was able to return and become a factor.

On the start, Sorensen threw a slide job at Davis to take the lead in turn two. Davis shot to the bottom and took the lead lap one. J.T. Wasmund and Jason Cummins followed the leaders and Joel Alberts got to fifth on lap three.

On lap five, Sorensen again threw a slider in turn two to take the lead, but Davis fired right back to regain the lead. A yellow then came out to close everyone back together. Davis and Sorensen were primed to continue their torrid battle, but the caution came out on lap seven.

Davis led Sorensen with Wasmund, Cummins and Jacob Bleess in the top five. Angst had charged from the tail and was all the way back up to sixth at this point. Bleess came alive on the start and charged to third by Wasmund while Alberts rallied past Cummins to get back in the top five.

Davis and Sorensen rocketed away from the pack. Davis opened up a bit of a lead, but Sorensen found something and reeled Davis back in. Bleess, Alberts and Wasmund were close for third with Angst right behind them. Sorensen caught Davis on la p17 and the race was on again.

The lead duo was close on lap 20 when they ran into lapped traffic. Sorensen made things interesting, but Davis held on for his fifth win of the year and fourth in a row. Bleess was third with Alberts fourth and Angst’s charge from the tail got him to fifth.
