Dahle Scores Emotional First Win At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (June 29)
By: Todd Narveson

There were fireworks on the track and in the skies over Deer Creek Speedway Saturday with the annual Firecracker show. The fireworks were presented by Trom Transport, Flashing Thunder Fireworks and Deer Creek Speedway. Other support for the event came from Weber Auto Parts, Kelly Construction Solutions and First Supply.

One-hundred eleven cars put on a whale of a show. Jacob Dahle took home a very emotional first win at the track while Brandon Jensen won his first of the season. Three other racers remained hot just like the recent June weather.

The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up first for their 18-lap main event. After a quick yellow at the start, outside pole sitter Don Schaefer took the lead. Nick Koehler zipped from sixth to second and challenged for the lead. Ryan Wetzstein and Peter Lueschner raced for third behind the lead duo.

Koehler took the lead on lap three while Wetzstein was up to second on lap seven. At this point Koehler held a large advantage over the field. Brandon Jensen started seventh and passed Schaefer for third on lap eight and then set after Wetzstein.

Jensen got past Wetzstein on lap 10 while Koehler had caught the back of the field and tried to maneuver around them. Jensen closed in and took the lead on lap 15 while the lead duo worked the lapped traffic.

Jensen led the final three circuits to score the win with Koehler in second. Wetzstein finished a solid third and Mitch Weiss would finish fourth. Don Schaefer placed fifth for his best finish so far this season.

Zach Elward led the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stock feature from the drop of the green flag. Dustin Doughty wasted no time when he came from eighth to second on lap four. Elward had opened up a big lead and was comfortably out front.

A caution on lap 11 wiped out Elward’s lead and place Doughty right behind him for the restart. Elward took off again but Doughty was within striking distance. Kory Adams worked his way to third late in the race.

Doughty made his move with one lap to go and drove on to his fifth win in a row. Elward would finish in second with Kory Adams third. Bernie Adams would finish in fourth and Jason Newkirk was fifth.

Mark Motl took the lead the first lap of the National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mod feature. A big crash on the frontstretch that involved Hunter Kennedy, Jett Sorensen and Brody Shaw brought out the red flag on the first lap. All the drivers were uninjured in the incident.

Motl led, but bounced off the wall and then broke to bring out the caution. On the restart, Brandon Hare, Brandon Maitland, Jim Chisholm and Jared Boumeester raced four abreast for the lead.

Chisholm shot out front and Nick Wagner bolted to second. Wagner then scraped the wall and dropped back. Chisholm set sail with a wicked fast pace on the high side of the speedway. Two yellows on lap 11 and 12 slowed the pace, but not Chisholm.

When the race resumed, Chisholm again got on the top side and checked out. Chisholm raced on to his fifth win of the year. Brandon Maitland finished in second with Boumeester third. Kadden Kath came from 10th to fourth and Hare was fifth.

Dexton Koch was selected as the Brauer Roofing Super Stock Challenge driver this week. Koch came up one lap short of claiming the $150 bonus. Dennis Dunbar led lap one with Brian Fetting right with him. Koch snuck past Schatney Sanders for third early on.

Fetting snapped up the lead on lap four and the top three were close through lap five. Koch passed Dunbar for second on lap six and Jeff Brauer went to third on lap seven. Koch then challenged Fetting for the lead while Neil Eckhart was now fourth.

Fetting and Koch were side-by-side for the lead with Koch going past on lap nine. Brauer then got by Fetting for second on lap 14, but Eckhart was getting quicker in the low groove and was up to third. Eckhart slipped past Brauer on lap 15 and got even stronger.

Eckhart caught Koch on lap 18 and the battle was on for the lead. Eckhart drove past when the white flag came out and took his third win in a row and denied Koch of the bonus. Brauer would finish in third with Fetting in fourth and Ryan Wiome was fifth. Eckhart and David Miller won the Coordinated Business Systems Hoosier Racing Tire giveaway this week.

When seven-time track champion Jason Cummins redrew the pole for the NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds, many probably thought the race could be for second. Early on it looked that way when Cummins had his car dialed to perfection on the top side of the track.

Joe Ludemann and Jacob Dahle raced for second with Lucas Schott along with Dustin Sorensen right in touch with the lead trio. Dahle got to second before a caution came out on lap six. On the restart, Sorensen darted to second, but Dahle came right back after him.

Brandon Davis moved to fourth on lap nine and then tried to reel in the top three. Cummins continued to set a fast pace while Dahle continued to battle with Sorensen for second and Davis was now in the mix with them. Those three dueled for second until Davis made slight contact with Sorensen and they both spun to bring out the yellow. Davis suffered damage and was done while Sorensen got his position back.

Things got wild on the start when Cummins, running the extreme high line caught the wall in turn two. Dahle, Sorensen and Brad Waits all shot past with Dahle in the lead. Waits got to second and challenged Dahle up front with Sorensen close.

Waits ran the low groove and took the lead on lap 16 when the leaders exited turn four. Waits pulled away just a bit, but Dahle got going once again a reeled in Waits. They raced tight for a couple of circuits and then Dahle regained the lead on lap 21 and led the last four laps for his first Deer Creek win. Waits had some issues with his left front and Sorensen slipped past for second. Waits was third with Cummins in fourth. Jake Timm would round out the top five.

It was a very emotional victory lane for Dahle. Not only was it first win at Deer Creek, but it was an incredible weekend for him. Dahle lost his father Jeff to cancer on May 25 and unfortunately his Dad did not get to see this Vanderbuilt car on the track. Dahle also won at Chateau Speedway on Friday for a two win weekend.

The Deer Creek crowd response to Dahle in victory lane was spine tingling when they went crazy for the winner. Dahle was then joined by his Mom LeAnn in victory lane which made it a truly special ending to a great night.
