Sorensen Wins Modified Thriller At The Creek

Spring Valley, MN (June 1)
By: Todd Narveson

It was another beautiful night for racing at Deer Creek Speedway. This week’s program featured and autograph session and out of car introductions for the WISSOTA AMSOIL Dirt Track Series Street Stock drivers.

This week’s event was presented by Young Truck Line, Randy & Sandy Norby, Thompson Garage Door & Openers along with Dohlman Lawn Care. Three drivers scored their first wins of the season while two more got their second win along with a clean sweep.

Twenty-two Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were led to the green flag by Don Schaefer and Casey Jane Trom. Schaefer led while Billy Steinberg got to second. Mitch Weiss charged from ninth to fourth by lap two and zipped past Trom for third on the third circuit.

Weiss then drove past Steinberg for second and then made quick work of Schaefer to steal the lead all on lap four. A caution on lap six would slow the race and bring the field back to Weiss’ rear bumper.

On the restart, Nick Koehler bolted to second while Dan Wheeler and Jason Haugerud entered the top five. Weiss would hold a good sized advantage the rest of the way for his second win of the season and a clean sweep of the evening.

Koehler would finish a few car lengths back in second place. Wheeler would end up in third with Haugerud in fourth. Ryan Goergen who started 15th, made a late race run to end up with a top five finish.

Ryan Jacobsen led the Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks in the early stages of the 18-lap race. Braden Brauer and Jason Newkirk gave chase with Bernie Adams with the leaders. Adams and Newkirk tangled and collected Zach Elward. The incident eliminated Elward and Adams was sent to the back.

Brauer challenged Jacobsen for the lead while Kory Adams ran the extreme high line in third. Brauer took the lead on lap three and then Adams got to the front. Dustin Doughty entered the picture and the race up front was good. Brauer reclaimed the lead before a yellow slowed the race on lap six.

On the restart, Doughty stole second from Adams and went after Brauer up front. Nick Schwebach slipped past Adams for third and they were close to the lead duo. Doughty challenged Brauer with a low line pass for the lead on lap 10.

Doughty went on for his second win of the year and also made it a clean sweep. Schwebach worked his way to second while Kory Adams was third. Brauer would finish fourth and Jacobsen scored a top five finish.

Jared Boumeester used his front row starting spot to lead the National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mod feature. A.J. Hoff and Jayden Larson gave chase early on, but Nick Wagner would sneak into third. Hoff tried to get alongside Boumeester and then Wagner along with Jim Chisholm made it a race for second.

A series of cautions slowed the race, but Shaun Walski took advantage of each restart. Walski got some great starts and eventually drove past Hoff to reach second. Ryan Maitland had come from tenth and moved up to fourth.

Boumeester then had his hands full with Walski. Walski executed a perfect slider to take the lead on lap 10, but Boumeester returned the favor on lap 11. A caution flew and would once again set up a restart for the leaders.

Walski snapped to the lead on lap 12 and never looked back for his first win of the season. Boumeester held off a late run from Ryan Maitland for third. Hoff finished in fourth and Chisholm finished out the top five.

Schatney Sanders would dominate the 20-lap Crenlo WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Sanders raced from row two and took the lead on lap one and never looked back. Sanders drove away into the night for his first win since May 13, 2017.

The race behind him had Brandon Duellman slip past Dennis Dunbar for second lap 4. Duellman would finish there while Jeff Brauer rallied from problems in his heat race to finish third. Ryan Wiome was tagged with an early caution but came back to fourth and Neil Eckhart was fifth.

Jacob Blees and Cory Crapser led the 24-car pack NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds to the green for their 25-lap main event. Brad Waits was with the leaders and took the lead on lap two. Dustin Sorensen ran the very top of the track behind the top three.

Sorensen made a daring move coming out of turn four from the top to the bottom and then slid up in front of Waits in turn two on lap two for the lead. A caution set up a great battle between Crapser and Waits for second. Brandon Davis who started 12th entered the picture in fourth.

Sorensen continued to be wicked fast on the very top and pulled away. Davis tracked down Crapser and was third on lap nine. Davis then passed Waits for second on lap 10. Sorensen held a big advantage at that point, but Davis plugged away on the bottom.

The leaders caught the back of the pack, but Sorensen worked the traffic well. The low line slowly got better for Davis and it appeared the top side may have gone away for Sorensen just a touch. It was apparent the Davis was possibly going to make a run at the leader.

The white flag flew and Davis was right on Sorensen. Davis dove low in turn three while Sorensen was right on the wall. Davis dug hard out of four but Sorensen slipped past for the win with Davis alongside. Waits ended up in third with Jason Cummins fourth and Lucas Schott fifth.
