Sorensen, Hovden, Chisholm & Amundson Top Spring Challenge

The A&A Electric & Underground Southern Minnesota Spring Challenge was on tap. Altenburg Construction was also on hand with support for the show.

Temperatures in the low 90’s greeted race fans and racers, but huge field of 149-car signed in for the 26-race program in front of a big crowd. Each division also had a $250 hard charger award that was put up by several donors in honor of fans that are no longer with us.

Twenty-five Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were on hand. Steven Amundson started on the pole would lead all 18-laps. Amundson crossed the finish line ahead of Cory Crapser, Don Schaefer, Josh Crary and 12th starter Ryan Goergen. Liz Toepper and Scott Simmons both advanced 11-positions and split the hard charger award.

The largest field of USRA Stock Car field to ever race at Deer Creek came out for the Ironman event. Thirty-four cars were slimmed down to the 25-car field for their 20-lap main.

Brayden Gjere led early on and then was passed by Derek Green on lap two. Pete Solum and Mitch Hovden raced for third and ninth starter Kyle Falck cracked the top five. Hovden bolted to second on a restart and Falck drove to third as they were right on Green up front.

Falck slipped to second on lap seven and then took the lead on lap nine. Hovden’s pass of Green for second on lap 10 would turn out to be a big one. Falck ran to the checkered flag first, but was disqualified in post-race tech inspection.

That handed the win to Hovden with Green second. Shawn Peter, Gjere and Dillon Anderson finished out the top five. Anderson started 17th and collected the $250 hard charger award.

Forty-seven USRA Ironman B-Mods ran five heats and two B-main to trim their cars down to the feature field. Jim Chisholm drove past A.J. Zvorak to take the lead on lap one. Jerry Young made a big charge to second, but would drop out early in the race.

Chisholm led the entire 20-laps while Dan Hovden worked his way from 10th to second and Zvorak would end up third. All eyes were on J.T. Wasmund and Alex Williamson when they sliced their way through traffic. Williamson started 17th and Wasmund 18th as both had to make the feature through a B-Main.

Wasmund charged all the way to fourth and apparently would be the hard charger too. But Wasmund was tripped up in post-race tech and disqualified. So Williamson was moved to fourth and Sam Wieben was fifth. Williamson and Dustin Kruse both advanced 13-positions and split the hard charger.

A big field of 43 USMTS Modifieds signed in for action. But it was 17-year old Dustin Sorensen led all 40 laps of the main event to register the first USMTS victory of his young career.

From the outside of the front row and from the drop of the green flag led fellow Gopher State youngster Lucas Schott to the checkered flag in a repeat finish of last Saturday’s USRA Modified feature during the North Star Nationals.

Schott was able to challenge Sorensen after a late race caution. Schott got alongside the leader on a couple of occasions, but Sorensen held the high groove and drover away for the big win.

The USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup win was worth $3,000 to Sorensen whose father, Mike Sorensen, has five career USMTS triumphs to his credit.

Schott, 21, held off a hard-charging Johnny Scott who clawed his way forward to finish third after starting 16th on the grid while Zack VanderBeek started 14th and followed Scott across the finish line to claim fourth. Rodney Sanders would round out the top five. Jake O’Neal was credited with the hard charger bonus.
