Three New Winners & A Drought Buster At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (April 28) - By: Todd Narveson:  The record cold and snowy spring pushed the start of the 2018 racing season back two weeks. It was also a question if racing would take place this week. But with some help from Mother Nature and a determined track prep crew, the season got underway at Deer Creek Speedway.

Before the races, kids had the opportunity to meet the Easter Bunny who finally was able to get out of his frozen home. The kids also enjoyed the Easter egg hunt that took place. A huge field of 133 cars, the most for an opener since 2008 filled the pit area. It was a full night of racing which was highlighted by three first time Deer Creek winners, a driver who busted a long winless brought and another who got his 25th season of racing off to a good start.

An excellent field of 22-Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks took the green flag for their 18-lap feature. Pole sitter Danny Richards took the early lead with Mike Knutson and Nick Schwebach close behind. Blake Adams moved to fourth while Knutson triggered a yellow when he spun.

On the restart, Adams got a good run and challenged Richards up front. Cody Kummer and Kyle Dykoff were now side-by-side for fourth. Another yellow on lap six slowed the field. Adams was able to maintain the top spot while the battle for second ensued. Richards held it, but Schewbach and Dykoff kept him in their sights. Jeff Crouse was on the charge from the 17th spot and was up to sixth when the yellow returned on lap 12.

Adams was strong and pulled away and Schwebach drove past Richards for second. Crouse was in the top five with three to go and continued his move forward. Adams cruised to his first Deer Creek win and Crouse screamed to second on the final lap. Schwebach finished in third with Richards fourth and Kummer wound up fifth.

Thirty-one Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were whittled down to a 24-car field for their 18-lap feature. The race took two attempts to get going and the yellow flag flew often. Justin Froemming passed pole sitter Michael Wytaske on lap one and took off.
Michael Truscott and Calvin Iverson both slipped past Wytaske and had a pretty good race for second the entire way. Froemming dominated the race and led every lap to score his first Deer Creek win. Truscott came out ahead for second over Iverson. Wytaske had a solid run in fourth and Jason Haugerud would round out the top five.

A huge pack of 42-National Fleet Graphics USRA B-Mods signed in. That number tied the car count record for that class on a point night show set on August 29, 2015. It took five heats and two b-mains to get the 25-car field for their 18-lap feature.
Outside pole sitter Andrew Bleess shot off on the top side of the track and bolted to the lead past pole sitter Kadden Kath. Bleess set sail while Kath was passed up by Jimmy Broszeit for second. Cole Denner and Shaun Walski battled for fourth. Walski made the pass on lap four and now Broszeit challenged Bleess up front.

Broszeit caught Bleess on lap nine and they ran even on laps 10 and 11. Broszeit snagged the lead on lap 11 and started to extend the lead until the caution flew on lap 13. From there Broszeit took off and lead the remainder of the race to also score his first Deer Creek Speedway win. Bleess held on to finish second with Walski in third. Kath drove to a fourth place finish and Parker Hale had a great late race charge to finish fifth.

Kipp Degroot took the lead at the drop of the green for the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Supet Stocks. But Jeff Brauer drove past to take the position away. Schatney Sanders got to third with Neil Eckhart in the mix. Brauer made slight contact with the turn two wall while Eckhart cruised to second on lap four. One lap later, Eckhart stole the lead from Brauer and started to drive away.

Brauer and Sanders had a good race for second but Brauer took the spot for good on lap 12 while Sanders slipped back. Eckhart led the rest of the race to start his 25th anniversary racing season with a win. Brauer finished second while Ryan Schaufler was third. Tommy Richards rested in the fourth spot and Dan Nissalke was fifth.

Nate Wasmund and Steve Wetzstein sat in row one for the Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified main event. Twenty-six cars took the green and Wasmund darted to the lead. Josh Angst passed Wetzstein for second and Keith Foss also got to third. Keith Tourville was on the move and was up to fourth. A caution slowed things down on lap six.

Tourville was able to slip past Foss for third before another caution came out on lap seven. Wsmund was in control up front but Angst was not too far behind. Two more cautions would slow the pace on lap 11 and 18 but it would not deter Wasmund.
Wasmund who wheeled his brand new Dirt Dueler for the first time picked up the win. It was Wasmund’s first feature in at the track since June 11, 2011. Angst ran in second with Tourville in third. Rounding out the top five were Foss and Mark Noble who got there from the 21st starting spot.
