Hale Gets First Win, Cummins In A Modified Thriller

Spring Valley, MN (August 19) By: Todd Narveson

This week at Deer Creek Speedway was a salute to military veterans and current serving military members. There were several things that took place to raise money for the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) of Minnesota. There was a silent auction, live auction, 50/50 ticket sales, event t-shirts and the push-up challenge in victory lane. Thirty businesses and individuals chipped in a dollar a piece for each push up done by the feature winners.

Free admission to all veterans and their guest was provided by Clements Subaru of Rochester. The program was presented by Weber Auto Parts, BK Millright, Adams Graphix and Rusty’s Last Call. A field of 113-cars were on hand to perform for the good sized crowd.

Jesse Hernandez led the early laps of the National Fleet Graphics WISSOTA Midwest Modified main event. Garitt Wytaske vaulted from sixth to second after an early caution flag. Steven Amundson ran third and the leaders ran close. Ryan Goergen was on the move and into the top five on lap five.

Wytaske slid past Hernandez for the lead on lap nine as Amundson challenged for second. A caution would slow thing down on lap 10 and another incident on the restart negated the start. During the caution Wytaske slowed on the front stretch to end his night.

Hernandez was back out front when the green flag returned, but Ryan Wetzstein set sail on the top side. Hernandez led lap 12 by a scant .004 of a second as yet another yellow slowed the race. There was another caution on the restart and when the race resumed Wetzstein was up front.

Goergen and Franklin went at it for third with Amundson right in front of them. Another caution for a four car crash slowed the race one last time. Goergen stole second on lap 14 and then chased down Wetzstein. Goergen challenged for the lead on lap 15 and made things interesting.

Wetzstein would hold off Goergen for his first win of the season. Amundson would finish behind Goergen for the third spot. Franklin raced home in fourth and Casey Trom came from 12th to fifth at the checkered flag. Wetzstein then reeled off 25 push-ups worth $30 a piece for the DAV.

Fred Prudoehl took off from the pole to lead the Adams Graphics WISSOTA Street Stock feature. They were three wide behind him with Danny Hanson to second with Zach Elward and Bobby Blowers in contention. Hanson got turned in turn three to bring out the yellow and was sent to the tail.

Elward went to the top on the restart along with Danny Richards. Prudoehl still led but Elward was flanked to his outside. Elward grabbed the lead on lap four while Bobby Blowers and Richards raced for third. Blowers snuck past Prudoehl for second just before a caution came out.

On the restart, Blake Adams came out of nowhere to third just after that a four car pile-up triggered another yellow. Elward continued to lead and the race for second heated up between Blowers and Richards. Kory Adams entered the picture on lap eight and got past Richards,

Adams, Blowers and Richards cycled three abreast on lap nine as Richards vaulted to second. Blake Adams was back in the mix and got past Blowers and Kory Adams to third one lap later.

Elward led, but Richards closed in on lap 13. Richards challenged and Elward led lap 15 by just .004 and lap 16 it was just a .002 of a second lead for Elward. Elward extended the lead after that and took his second win of the season. Richards was second with Blake Adams third, Bobby Blowers in fourth and Kory Adams fifth. Elward then got down on the ground and did 30-push-ups for the Push-Up Challenge.

A secret donor put up an extra $200 for the Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mod feature winner. Jackson Hale bolted from row one to led the race with Trevor Fecht and Dustin Kruse close behind. A caution slowed the race early on and Hale again took off from the start.

Jim Chisholm drove to second and then got to Hale. But a series of three cautions, one for a seven car pile-up in turn one kept the race stagnant. Chisholm mounted a serious threat to Hale’s lead on laps nine and ten. Hale edged back out front on lap 11 as Kruse moved to second. Another yellow flew on lap 14 to keep Hale in check.

Hale used the top groove throughout the 18-lap race. Chisholm and Kruse had a dandy race going for second. Eyes were also on J.T. Wasmund who charged from 20th and entered the top five. Kruse passed Chisholm for second as Wasmund was up to fourth.

Hale would go on to get his first career feature win. Hale then reeled off a Push-Up Challenge record 53 push-ups in victory lane for the DAV. Kruse finished in second and Chisholm was third. Wasmund’s great run ended in fourth and Andrew Bleess raced from 11th to fifth.

Jay Oricchio led the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stocks until a caution came out on lap three. On the restart, Jeff Brauer drove past to take the lead. Neil Eckhart and A.J. Hoff raced for third while Tommy Richards got into the top five.

Richards passed Hoff on lap nine before a yellow came out on lap nine. On the start, Richards bolted past Eckhart to second and chased down Brauer. That duo raced for the lead on lap 11 with Brauer on the top side and Richards down low. Brauer led lap 12 by just ,001 of a second and one more yellow would slow the race on lap 16.

Brauer took off from there to win his sixth of the season. Richards finished in second place with Eckhart in third. Hoff finished in fourth and Ryan Schuafler was fifth. Hale’s push up record did not last long when Brauer pulled off 65 push-ups after his win.

Jason Cummins redrew the pole with Adam Hensel to his outside to lead the 26-car Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds to the green. Cummins took the lead with Hensel close and Jacob Bleess was third. Brian Shaw was fourth but spun to bring out a caution.

The green flag flew and Cummins nailed his right rear quarter panel into the turn two wall. Hensel bolted by and the race was on when Cummins got back to the outside and reclaimed the lead in turn four. Brad Waits and Josh Angst were behind the lead duo and row seven starter Dustin Sorensen was fifth on lap four.

Cummins extended his lead a bit with Hensel and Waits behind. Sorensen got past Angst for fourth on lap five. They would stay in that formation until a caution came out on lap 12 to set up a wild restart.

Hensel went low, Cummins high and Sorensen darted to the middle and they were three wide for the lead. Cummins came out on top and Sorensen was up to second. Cummins held his lead, but Sorensen got faster as the laps wound down.

Sorensen closed on Cummins and the race for the lead heated up on lap 18. Cummins led lap 19 by just .005 of a second with Sorensen to his inside. They continued to dice back and forth in a great battle for the lead. Sorensen was tucked to Cummins inside as they came to the white flag.

Sorensen led lap 24 as they charged into turn one. Cummins got a great run on the top shelf in turn two and drove back by Sorensen for the lead. Cummins held off another charge from Sorensen to nab his eighth win of the season in dramatic fashion.

It was also Cummins’ 18th feature trump of 2017 and then he ripped off 50 push-ups in victory lane. Sorensen was second and Hensel finished in third. Angst would take a fourth place finish and Waits finished out the top five.
