Elward Nails Down First Deer Creek Win

Spring Valley, MN (August 5) By: Todd Narveson - Mother Nature again tried to wreck the party at Deer Creek Speedway. Rain began to fall before the WISSOTA Super Stock heat races. That created an hour rain delay. One Super Stock heat got in and then another small shower stopped the show for about 15-minutes. The rain showers abated and the rest of the program was able to be completed.

This week’s event was presented by Advanced Disposal, Podein’s Power Equipment, Weber Auto Parts and Pfister Seed. There were 104-cars signed in to race in the five divisions of cars.

The National Fleet Graphics WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up first this week for their 18-lap feature. Michael Hofer led lap one with Mitch Weiss on his tail. Robbie Franklin and Garitt Wytaske were after it for third. Weiss stole the lead on lap four and then Hofer spun and collected Franklin to being out the caution.

Weiss led on the start with Franklin restored to second. Steven Amundson came up to challenge Wytaske for third and Dan Wheeler cracked the top five. Amundson passed Wytaske and then challenged Franklin for second. Now Jason Vandekamp was in the top five after he started tenth. Don Schaefer lost a driveshaft on lap 11 to trigger a yellow.

On the restart, Vandekamp bolted to third and was right with the lead duo. Wheeler was back up to fourth and hung with the top three. Weiss and Amundson were now side-by-side for the lead with Vandekamp and Wheeler close when another yellow came out on lap 14.

Vandekamp took full advantage on the start and drove to second. Vandekamp then slipped past Weiss or the lead on lap 15. Weiss would develop problems and dropped off the pace. Another yellow would set up a two lap dash to the checkered flag.

Vandekamp led the pack to the finish line first for his second win here and 15th overall. Wheeler would finish in second with Wytaske third. Ryan Goergen would take the fourth spot and Jeff McDonald was fifth.

The Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks would once again provide some great racing in their main event and there would be a first time winner at the end. Braden Brauer took off from row one to lead, but Zach Elward passed him to lead lap one.

The pack was two, three and sometimes four wide while they battled for position. Greg Lammers moved to the lead with Elward there and Danny Richards was cranked up on the top side. They were three wide for second when Jason Newkirk went for a wild spin on the frontstretch to bring out the caution.

Elward took the lead again while Richards was second as another four wide scramble developed for fifth, Kory Adams cracked the top five and was up to fourth on lap five. Richards challenged for the lead and Adams was now third and close to the leaders. A yellow on lap nine would slow the race and keep things close.

Elward continued to lead with Richards and Adams. Mike Blowers clawed his way to fourth on lap 11 with Nick Schwebach in the mix also. Elward held off the pack to score his first Deer Creek win. Blowers got to second with Richards in third. Schwebach finished in fourth and Adams wound up fifth.

J.T. Wasmund led the Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mods until turn four of the first lap when he spun. Several cars were collected and Wasmund was done for the night. Jim Chisholm took the lead from there with Jerry Young and Dustin Kruse on his heels.

Kruse took second but Young continued to apply pressure. Chisholm led after a caution, but Young was right ion his outside and Kruse was there also. Another caution would slow the pace and on the start Kruse again took second away from Young.

On lap eight, Chisholm, Kruse and Young were three abreast for the lead. Kruse led lap 8, but spun in turn three and the caution came out. Chisholm was charged with the yellow and Kruse got the lead back.

Kruse held off Young at the line for his second win of the season. Miah Christensen raced to third and Ben Moudry rallied from 16th to fourth. Shaun Walski would round out the top five.

Neil Eckhart led the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stocks until Dan Nissalke took over on lap three. Jeff Brauer was on the fly and passed Nissalke one lap later to be out front.

Brauer cruised to his fourth win of the season and his 56th career win at the speedway. Tommy Richards got to second on lap 11 and ended up there. Nissalke would race to a third place finish with Eckhart and Ryan Schaufler in the top five.

Cory Bruggeman and Owen Grube led the 26-car field to the green for the Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature. Bruggeman took the lead with Jason Cummins and Brad Waits second and third. The top three pulled away in the early stages and had a great race going on.

Cummins took the lead on lap seven, but Bruggeman drove back by on lap eight. Cummins drove by again and now Waits took second on lap12. Lucas Schott was on the move from the 11th spot and took fourth on lap 14. A caution on lap 17 was brought out and Waits was sent to the tail for getting into a lapped car.

Cummins led and Schott bolted to second with Keith Foss to third. Dustin Sorensen got to fourth and closed on Foss at the conclusion of lap 19. Schott challenged Cummins for the lead on lap 20 and a yellow came out to slow the race. Another yellow on the start for a seven car pileup stacked things up.

The last five laps were really good when Schott tried to wrestle the lead away from Cummins. Schott used the low groove and led lap 23 by a scant .001-seconds. Schott also led lap 24 when the leaders came to the white flag.

Cummins charged hard on the top side of turn three and the race was again on. Cummins glided by in turn four to steal his sixth win of the season and 14th of the season. Schott was second with Sorensen in third. Josh Angst had a late race rally to fourth and Foss was fifth.
