First Time Winners Highlight Pink-Out Night

Spring Valley, MN (June 24)

By: Todd Narveson

This week’s program at Deer Creek Speedway featured Pink-Out Night with Join The Journey to help raise awareness and money for breast cancer. The show was presented by Rochester Golf Carts, Ulven’s Hardware, BK Millright, Adams Graphix, First Supply and Blake Adams Racing.

Mother Nature put a big crimp in the start time when rains came late in the afternoon. But the track prep crew got after it when the rains ceased and got the track back in shape. During the delay the crowd was kept entertained with a hula hoop contest, trike races a live auction and even a marriage proposal. The event got started at 8:20 p.m. with the unfinished business of four make up features left over from last Saturday.

The Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks were up first with their 18-lap make-up race. Zach Elward led the field with Kory Adams close on his heels. Noah Grinstead and Mike Blowers joined the lead duo up front in a tight battle. The race was really good behind the leaders with five cars going at it for third.

Grinstead got by Adams for second on lap 12 and closed in on Elward. Blowers ran third and Danny Richards was on the move to fourth, Blowers and Richards bumped and that allowed Elward and Grinstead to decide the race for themselves. Grinstead challenged on the final lap and shot to the inside in turn four. They charged to the checkered flag with Grinstead the winner by .018-seconds. This win was the first for Grinstead at Deer Creek while Blowers, Richards and Adams rounded out the top five in a race that went without a caution.

Dustin Kruse and Jett Sorensen led the Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mods to the green for their make-up feature. Kruse took off from the pole to lead with J.T. Wasmund quickly to second. Brandon Hare passed Jett Sorensen for third while Kruse pulled away.

This race also went green to checkers without a yellow flag on a hammer down racetrack. Kruse scooted to his first win of the season followed by Wasmund in second. Hare finished in third with Trevor Fecht and Jim Chisholm in the top five.

Dave Solum jumped to the lead at the start of the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stock make-up race. However Tommy Richards stormed from seventh to lead lap one. Richards would lead every lap of the caution free race to get his second win of the season. Jeff Brauer ran second with A.J. Hoff third, Schatney Sanders came home fourth and Kevin Hager was fifth.

Jason Cummins took off from row one of the Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified make-up main event. The race was slowed by several minor caution flags that kept Dustin Sorensen and Keith Foss close to Cummins. Cummins would hold the lead and fend off a couple of looks from Sorensen.

Sorensen then had to deal with Foss for second and Cummins extended his lead. Cummins crossed the finish line first with Sorensen in second. Foss ran in third as J.D. Auringer took fourth and Greg Pfiefer Jr finished in fifth.

With the show from the previous week complete, this week’s event got underway at 9:20 p.m. with 111-cars ready to tackle the speedway. Sixteen qualifying races took place and the first feature event rolled on to the track at 10:55 p.m.

The five feature winners were going to receive a challenge in the Tralo Companies victory lane. They were challenged to do push-ups to raise money for Join The Journey. Many local businesses and individuals donated $1 for every push-up the feature winners could do.

The National Fleet Graphics WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were led to the green flag by Tianna Mithun and Steven Amundson. Amundson took the early advantage but an early caution slowed the race. On the start, Billy Steinberg jumped to second while Ryan Goergen and Dustin Steinbrink raced for third. A caution on lap 13 tightened up the pack and set up a dramatic finish.

Amundson led with Steinberg second as the laps counted down. With two to go Steinberg pulled alongside Amundson. Amundson brushed the wall and Steinberg took the lead with one lap to go. Amundson rallied on the final lap and drove up to Steinberg as they crossed under the checkered flag.

Steinberg won by .020-seconds for his first win at Deer Creek. Steinberg then did 22 push-ups in honor of the 22-military veterans that commit suicide each day in this country. Goergen ran in the third spot with Robbie Franklin fourth and Garitt Wytaske fifth. Steinberg also became the seventh different winner in seven nights of racing for the Midwest Modifieds.

Thirteen year old Braden Brauer and Kory Adams led the 23-car Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stock field to the green flag. Brauer took the lead from the start as Nick Schwebach got by Adams for second on lap 2. Schwebach then assumed the lead one lap later, but Brauer hung right with him.

Blake Adams drove to third then broke on lap six and glided to the infield. Kyle King was up to third and then Mike Blowers and Jason Newkirk collided to bring out the yellow and send Blowers to the rear of the field. Travis Krause then raced to third, but his night ended early with a breakdown.

Schwebach was pressured by Brauer up front and just as Brauer made his move the caution came out on lap 15. From there Schwebach led the final three laps for his first win of the season. Schwebach then nailed down 20-push up for Join The Journey. Brauer had a super run in second with King in third. Danny Richards finished fourth and Mike Blowers came from the tail to wind up fifth.

Kadden Kath and J.T. Wasmund raced for the lead in the early stages of the 18-lap Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mod main event. On lap two several cars got sideways on the frontstretch and a huge crash ensued. It was a vicious hard crash that flipped Dustin Kruse on his roof and involved at least 10-cars. The red flag was brought out and fortunately all the drivers were uninjured in the 21-minute red flag period.

Andrew Bleess jumped to the lead when the race restarted with Wasmund and Kath in pursuit. Bleess led the rest of the way to score his first career win. Bleess donated $100 to Join The Journey in victory lane. Bleess also received a $200 bonus from a secret donor. Wasmund ran second with Jim Chisholm up to third. Brandon Hare was fourth and Kyle Kath raced to fifth.

Neil Eckhart led the first 11-laps of the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Jeff Brauer came from eighth and was second on lap six. Tommy Richards passed Schatney Sanders for third on lap 10. Brauer started to cut into Eckhart’s lead and started to make things interesting on lap 13.

Brauer nabbed the lead on lap 14 and went on to his second win of the season and his 54th career win at Deer Creek. Brauer then reeled off 50 push-ups in victory lane after the 20-lap race. Eckhart finished second with Richards in third. A.J. Hoff was fourth and Ryan Schaufler ran in fifth.

Jason Cummins started on the pole of the 25-lap Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature. Most thought Cummins was a shoe in from the win as he won earlier in the night from row one. It was just matter of how many push-ups could he do in victory lane. Well not so fast, the race is 25-laps. Cummins dominated the first eight laps until a flat tire ended his run on a lap nine caution.

Keith Foss inherited the lead with Dustin Sorensen and Brad Waits behind him. They charged three wide for the lead on the restart with Sorensen now in the lead and Waits in second on lap 10. Sorensen and Waits put on a great show up front when Sorensen used the low line and Waits went topside.

They ran close until Waits stole the lead on lap 22. Waits led the final three circuits for his first win of the season and his first in almost two seasons at Deer Creek.Spencer Ihrke then did 24-push-ups which is Brad’s number for Join The Journey. Sorensen held on to second with Foss third, Adam Hensel in fourth and Ryan Ruter fifth. The final checkered flag fell at approximately 12:40 a.m.
