Deer Creek Speedway

Goergen, Richards, Chisholm & Brauer Score At Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (June 10)

By: Todd Narveson

It was a hot and sultry evening at Deer Creek Speedway and the action on the track was as hot as the weather. The show was presented by Vestas American Wind Technology, Old Dutch and Schott’s Hardwood Floors. There was fun for the kids also as the first ever box car race was held at intermission.

The Senior Slingshot division ran their make-up feature from last Saturday at intermission. The 19-race program that featured 91-cars was completed in less than three hours. One driver scored his first ever win at the speedway while three other nabbed their first wins of the season at Deer Creek.

The National Fleet Graphics WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were led to the green flag by Don Schaefer and Ryan Goergen for their 18-lap race. Goergen jumped to the early lead but Schaefer was closed behind. Billy Steinberg and Robbie Franklin were up in the mix with the leaders. Two cautions would slow the race on lap five and six.

Franklin and Steinberg had a good race going for second and were right on the leader Goergen. Schaefer remained close to the lead trio while Ryan Wetzstein who went to the tail for the lap five yellow was up to sixth. Schaefer got to third by Steinberg while Franklin zipped low on the leader Goergen. Franklin was scored the leader to complete lap 10.

Goergen drove back by Franklin to reclaim the lead and Schaefer stayed right in the battle. A yellow on lap 13 slowed the field and further tightened up the pack. When the race resumed Goergen led the field and fended them off for his first ever Deer Creek win and a clean sweep. Schaefer made a late race pass on Franklin for second while Steinberg finished in fourth with Wetzstein in the top five.

The Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks had 20-cars roll to the green flag with Bernie Adams and Troy Voth in row one. It was a crazy start when the pack flew down the backstretch three wide two deep for the top six spots. Mike Blowers amazed everyone when he charged from ninth to first and led lap one. Five cars went at it for second and Jason Newkirk took that spot.

Danny Richards was on the move and drove by Blake Adams and Troy Voth to third. Then Richards went after Newkirk for second and made the pass on lap eight. Richards then used the high side and tried to track down the leader Blowers. Richards caught Blowers and they traded a little paint with Richards scored the leader on lap 12. Blowers returned the favor on lap 13 and reclaimed the lead.

Richards drove back by and held on for his first win at Deer Creek this season and it was also a clean sweep for him. Blowers’ bid for four straight wins ended in second. Blake Adams finished in third with NewKirk and Travis Krause fourth and fifth.

A field of 24 Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mods took the green flag for their 18-lap main event. The race started with a bang when pole sitter Jackson Hale spun and triggered and nine car incident, They were three wide on the restart and cars bounced off each other as Kadden Kath took the lead. Zach Brom and Jim Chisholm wrestled for second with Jerry Young close behind. Sixth row starter Dustin Kruse bolted to the top five on lap three.

Kruse passed Brom to fourth on lap five as the caution flag flew. On the start Kath still led but the race for second heated up with Chisholm, Young and Kruse. Kruse got by Young and then Chisholm for second on lap eight. Kath, Kruse and Chisholm circled the track in tight formation with Chisholm making the pass for the lead. Kath drove to the low side of Chisholm and the leaders made contact. Smoke appeared from under Kath’s car while Kruse got back to second.

Chisholm led the final laps for his first win of the season. Kruse’s great run ended in second with Young in the third spot. Trevor Fecht raced to the fourth position and Kath managed to limp his damaged machine to a fifth place finish.

A.J. Hoff passed Harland Morehart to lead lap one of the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stock feature. Jeff Brauer raced from seventh and got by Schatney Sanders for third and then to second on lap two. Brauer zipped past Hoff for the lead on lap three and took off. Meanwhile Tommy Richards sliced through traffic and got to second.

Brauer had a straightaway lead when Richards moved to second. Richards was able to close the gap and challenged briefly, but Brauer pulled away in the late stages of the race. Brauer got his first win of the season and also made it a clean sweep for him. Richards was second with Neil Eckhart in third, Hoff was fourth and Ryan Schaufler finished in fifth.

An excellent field of 22 NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds took the green for the 25-lap finale for the night. Jason Cummins redrew the pole position and that was about all she wrote for the rest of the compeition. Cummins took off and led every lap for his second win at Deer Creek and his sixth overall in 2017.

Jake Timm finished in second with Steve Wetzstein in third after he started in seventh. Lucas Schott would get past Josh Angst late in the race to finish in fourth while Angst rounded out the top five.
