Storms & First Time Winners Highlight Deer Creek

Spring Valley, MN (June 16) - By: Todd Narveson - (Photo courtsey of Buck Monson Photo) A hot and humid day turned stormy for a brief time but the show went on for Clements Chevrolet and Old Dutch Foods night at Deer Creek Speedway. Just as the final WISSOTA Super Stock heat was complete a mini monsoon hit the facility and brought the program to a halt.

It was a brief but very heavy thunderstorm but it did not deter the track crew as they quickly were back on the track and after a delay the track was worked back in a racing resumed around 9:00 p.m. It was worth the wait as the rest of the program was dynamite and there a couple of first time winners this year and a couple continue on a tear.

There was some extra money on the line as Randy and Patti Eastvold of Hanson Tire Service in Leroy kicked in a extra $100 for each winner and third place finisher in the feature races. Bill Funk of Funk Trucking in Chatfield put and extra $100 up for the USRA Modified winner. The Thissen family of the Grand Meadow Meat Market also donated a package of hot beef sticks to each winner.

First on the track for their feature was the Dirt Doctor Truck WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds. Twelve cars took the green with Don Schaefer the early leader. National point leader Cory Crapser wasted no time getting to the front going from sixth to second in two corners. Cody Gardner did the same storming from eighth to third on lap one.

Crapser made quick work of Schaefer for the lead when he blew by on lap two. Gardner then challenged Schaefer for second and a great battle ensued. Gardner got by on lap eleven, but by that time Crasper had a half a lap lead and was gone.

Crasper pulled off the clean sweep for his 14th win of the season a fifth at Deer Creek. Gardner finished a distant second while Bill Stettner got by Schaefer late in the race for third. Schaefer ended up in fourth and Steven Amundson was fifth.

There may have only been seven Cap-N-Cork Wine & Spirits WISSOTA Street Stocks tonight, but they had one great feature race. Derek Ludington took the lead from the pole, but his car pushed up the track to complete lap one and Nick Schwebach drove past along with Kory Adams and Troy Voth.

It was then a battle for the lead when Adams started to apply pressure on Schwebach. The race was intense when Adams would get to the inside of the leader only to have Schwebach hold him back. Voth closed in and made it a three-car party up front. Then Mike Blowers got to fourth and he got closer to the top three.

Schwebach and Adams cycled around the track many times side-by-side with Voth and Blowers in close proximity. Adams gave it one final shot on the final lap but came up just a bit short as Schwebach beat him to the checkered flag. It was Schwebach's first win at the speedway with Adams second, Voth in third with Blowers and Bernie Adams in the top five.

Dan Tenold and Alan Wagner led the Hinz Enterprise Trucking USRA B-Mods to the green for their 18-lap main. It started with a thud when the lead pack all came together and five cars piled up in turn two, Tenold exited with a flat tire and a complete restart was called for.

Parker Hale took the lead with Wagner second until he drifted high in turn four and that allowed Brady Keefe, Jacob Bleess and Kylie Kath to zip past. Bleess continued his march to the front going by Keefe for second and that brought along Kath to third. Bleess then closed in on Hale for the lead on lap seven.

They raced side-by-side and then Hale just got a little higher than he liked on lap nine and Bleess stole the lead. Kath then went after Hale for second and they had a good race going. A yellow for debris on lap 14 would close the field back up for a four-lap shootout.

Bleess drove away from there to score his second win of the season. Kath would finish second with Hale in third. Twelfth starter Shaun Walski made a late race charge to fourth and Scott Demmer finished in the fifth position.

The Wagner Trucking WISSOTA Super Stock feature got off to a slow start when the leaders bunched up and that got Michael Hofer and Kelly Anderson locked together to bring out the caution flag. Shaun Olson took the lead with Ryan Siegle close behind. Behind the lead trio Kevin Hager, Jeff Brauer and Brian Fetting drove three wide for third.

Siegle stole the lead on lap two while Brauer was now fourth and eighth started Anderson entered the top five. Anderson continued his assault to the front when he passed Brauer for fourth on lap four. Anderson then drove by Hager for third on the next circuit and then quickly got by Olson for second.

Siegle got loose in turn two on lap seven and Anderson closed in. Anderson dove low on the leader and they dueled for the lead. Anderson abandoned the low line and went to the top on lap 10 and took the lead. Brauer was now third and challenged Siegle for second. Brauer got by on lap 11, but Anderson had opened up the lead.

Anderson scored his third win in a row and Brauer finished second. Hager got by Siegle with two to go for third, but Siegle managed to get back by to finish third. Hager finished in fourth and Hofer ended up fifth.

The 25-lap Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Models had a wild main event on the hammer-down racetrack. The leaders were turning lap times a little less than a half second off the track record set with an open motored Late Model three years ago. Justin Sass took off from row one with Kelly Anderson second and Mike Prochnow zoomed to third on lap two. Anderson swept past Sass for the lead on lap two and Prochnow got to second and Lance Matthees was up to fourth.

Prochnow flew on the top of the track and quickly gunned down Anderson on lap five for the lead as Matthees was now third. Matthees got past Anderson for second on lap six ans was right on Prochnow for the lead. Joe Ludemann and Nate Beyenhof tangled on the backstretch to bring out the yellow.

On the restart, Jordan Yaggy got to the top five and then got by Sass for fourth on lap eight. Yaggy then challenged Anderson to the inside for third in turn four and just then Anderson spun and collected Yaggy for another yellow. Anderson was done with heavy front-end damage and this set up a disastrous restart.

The green came out and Yaggy got turned around and that triggered a huge six-car pileup. They were stacked up like cordwood as they piled into Yaggy's spun car. Roger Torgerson's car ended up on top of Nate Beyenhof and the front of Torgerson's car wedged under John Kaanta. Also involved were Kyle Jumbeck and Lucas Peterson. Only Jumbeck would be able to continue and there were only seven of the sixteen starters left.

The race resumed and it was a colossal battle between Prochnow and Matthees. The duo battled tooth and nail for the lead the rest of the way. They traded pleasantries a couple of times and Matthees threw everything but the kitchen sink at Prochnow in an attempt to take the lead.

Prochnow held off the determined Matthees for his second win of the season and the first repeat winner this year. Matthees was a close second with Nick Beyenhof third, Jumbeck finished fourth with his damaged car and Jerry Bloom scored another top five finish.

The final race of the night was the 25-lap Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds. Three-time defending track champion Jason Cummins has consistently been in the top five this season but had yet to find victory lane. Tonight would be Cummins night when he redrew the pole and decimated the 25-car field and thus ended Brandon Davis' streak at five.

Cummins blew off of row one and was on a rail up on the top of the track. The tracks electronic scoring had Cummins turning laps a tenth of a second off the track record. Cummins rocketed away from the pack to score his first win of the season and 26th of his career at Deer Creek.

Mike Sorensen and Lucas Schott had a good race for second in the late stages but Sorensen would hold on to be the runner up. Davis had another good run when he drove from tenth to fourth and J.J. Wise had his best finish to date in fifth.

Next Friday June 22 is camper appreciation night at the tracks campground. Camping is just $10 and there will be music by Heartland Express along with games, food and beverages. Racing will continue on Saturday, June 23 with Biker Night at the speedway Motorcycle enthusiasts are encouraged to have their bike to the track by 4:00 p.m. and they will receive free admittance to the speedway. The Truck Country Slingshots will get underway at 3:00 p.m. on the Button Buck Speedway.
